A Victorian Gothic red brick tower and attached light keepers house make this one of the most stunning lighthouses I have seen. First lit in 1875 and continued burning until 1990 when it was deactivated.  At the time of deactivation the lighthouse was only 55 feet from the edge and in danger of falling over the bluff.  The lighthouse was moved to its current location and in 1994 was relit.  I read that there is a beautiful curving iron staircase that leads to the top with amazing views but the lighthouse was closed for the season when we were there. ...

Getting there takes a little planning.  You will need a boat or passage on the Block Island Ferry.  The ferry leaves mainland Rhode Island from several different towns.  After arriving on the island getting to the beach requires a vehicle or a bicycle.  A short drive takes you to a dirt road and the Mansion Beach parking lot.  Just imagine one of the islands most glorious mansions sitting on this hill overlooking the beach below.  Now the only remnants of the mansion are the foundation.  The old wall is a great picnicking location.  Down on the beach you will find the...
