An Old Ohio Barn

As the morning sun rises behind this old barn all is quiet.  There are no animals moving around and making noise.  There is no farmer in the barn getting morning chores done.  The lonely old barn just sits year after year falling farther into disrepair. What happened that this barn is sitting empty?  As I sit looking at it, I can still imagine what is missing.  The farmer is getting the tractor out of the barn to plow the field for planting.  His wife is in the barn milking the cow to prepare breakfast.  The boy is mucking out stalls...

Noah "Bud" Ogle is a decedent of the first settlers in White Oak Flats, Tennessee, now known as Gatlinburg.  On 400 acres of land he built a cabin, barn, and a mill.  He and his wife raised a family, grew corn and tended an apple orchard. The barn Noah built is common among Appalachian Mountain barns.  It is a crib style barn.  Crib barns are built from logs stacked and dovetailed on the corners to form a square crib.  Most times the cribs are left without chinking filling in the gaps between the logs.  This barn is a 4 crib barn.  There...

Paradise is found at Mansion Beach

Getting there takes a little planning.  You will need a boat or passage on the Block Island Ferry.  The ferry leaves mainland Rhode Island from several different towns.  After arriving on the island getting to the beach requires a vehicle or a bicycle.  A short drive takes you to a dirt road and the Mansion Beach parking lot.  Just imagine one of the islands most glorious mansions sitting on this hill overlooking the beach below.  Now the only remnants of the mansion are the foundation.  The old wall is a great picnicking location.  Down on the beach you will find the...
